This is a common condition that mostly affects children. Symptoms include tonsillar enlargement, bad breath, difficulty swallowing and a sore throat, fever and/or earache.
Recurrent tonsillitis can lead to serious complications including abscess formation in the throat. This infection can be spread through the blood to the heart, kidneys and joints.
Treatment for recurrent tonsillitis is to remove the tonsils completely through a surgical procedure known as a Tonsillectomy.
A tonsillectomy is carried out under general anaesthesia to remove the tonsils and can be done as a day surgery, meaning your child can go home on the same day after the operation.
